    Rookie of the Year

Today, on Page B4, the Orlando Sentinel wrote that "no one has come onto the scene more gangbusters than Orlando's freshman congressman," Alan Grayson. What a year! Here are some of the things that we have accomplished, for Central Florida and for America:

    (1) Increasing Congressionally directed spending here by over 500% in just one year (a year when we needed it the most), and redirecting that spending away from favors from lobbyists, and toward meeting human needs.
    (2) Attacking the housing crisis by getting our local judges to institute a mediation program to prevent foreclosures, a program that the Supreme Court of Florida just expanded throughout the state.
    (3) Overcoming years of delay and procedural impediments to pass the Travel Promotion Act, establishing a fully-funded federal commission that will spend $200 million a year promoting our #1 industry, tourism.
    (4) Supporting and voting for a bill that delivered over $200 million in more federal money to Orange County schools, keeping many of them from closing, and an additional $80 million for schools in Lake and Marion Counties.
    (5) Winning a commitment from both the House Leadership and the White House to erect a $50 million National Hurricane Research Center in Orlando as part of the climate change bill, the first new federal facility in the district within memory.
    (6) Arranging for funding and progress in the cleanup at the Pinecastle Jeep Range, to help keep our children safe.
    (7) Establishing weekly office hours in Ocala, Tavares and Winter Garden, to meet the needs of people throughout our 140-mile-long district, and responding individually to almost 100,000 e-mails sent to our official website, grayson.house.gov.

Nationally, we have made a huge splash; by mid-October, there were over 11 million web pages discussing Congressman Grayson and his impact on national issues:

    (1) On health care reform, Grayson took the initiative away from the bean-counters and the naysayers, and put it squarely where it belonged: saving lives. Over 10,000 news articles reported on Grayson's publicizing of a Harvard study showing that 44,789 Americans die each year for lack of health care, and Grayson's plea to do something about it.
    (2) Grayson conducted a series of Congressional hearings exposing the utter absence of accountability at the Federal Reserve. An online video of one of those hearings has become the most-watched Congressional hearing in history, with over 3 million views. Another was the second most-watched news video of any kind, during the week that it posted.
    (3) Grayson used these hearings to galvanize support for a 26-year-old bill by Republican Ron Paul to audit the Federal Reserve. The bill had never before had a hearing, and had never come up for a vote. This year, Grayson signed up over 130 Democratic co-sponsors for the bill, joining over 170 Republicans. The Paul-Grayson Amendment to audit the Federal Reserve then passed the House, becoming virtually the only substantive measure to earn bipartisan support this year.
    (4) Grayson has continued his fight against war profiteers by introducing and advancing legislation to make federal contractors pay for some of their own cost overruns, and requiring the Government to pay more attention to cost when awarding contracts. Grayson also added "legislative history" to a bill to prevent any contractor that submits a false record to the Government from ever receiving another contract - the "corporate death penalty" for crooked contractors.
    (5) Grayson has become the scourge of Wall Street bankers. He became the first freshman to pass a bill - a bill to crack down on unearned bonuses that failed Wall Street banks were paying to themselves with taxpayer money. He revealed that the Federal Reserve has handed out $500,000,000,000 to foreign banks. He exposed the fact that the Government has been paying millions of dollars in attorneys' fees to defend bankers who cheated the Government. And he has voted against each and every bailout.
    (6) Grayson has stood up for our Constitution, by writing and passing a House Resolution urging all schools to spend one week teaching the Constitution to high school seniors each September, and by disseminating tens of thousands of copies throughout the district. And Grayson has not hesitated to apply Constitutional principles to current affairs; as he said on national TV last month, "the Constitution didn't contemplate a standing army, much less an army standing in Kabul."

This is what the Sentinel means today when it says that "no one has come onto the scene more gangbusters than" Alan Grayson. As a Republican remarked in today's newspaper article, Grayson "has got the pulpit to get things done in D.C." Action, not talk. Congressman Alan Grayson - 2009 Rookie of the Year.
